Mr Bokashi

 About Bokashi:

Invented by the Japanese, the lightly sprinkled powder anaerobically changes the chemical composition of the treated food waste; neutralizes the smells and allows for the faster decomposition of the materials.

Undiluted Bokashi juice, liquid created as a result of the process, can be used as a drain or toilet cleaner, or diluted at 100:1, used as a liquid fertilizer for root spraying.

Bokashi collections Bokashi treated food waste collections are not yet available.

On the collection day, once every 28 days, either empty the bucket into a bag and leave on the pavement, or if an exchange bucket is required, leave it inside the gate. Exchange can only occur if there is someone home to open the gate for the exchange to take place.

Collection costs: R65 a month; R450 for 6 months or R800 per annum per bucket per collection, and R50 per additional bucket

Bucket exchange: R50 per bucket, invoiced quarterly.

The buckets can be ordered at a cost of R55 per brown 10L bucket; R100 per black 25L bucket.

Self Composting:

2 Bokashi kits will be required, as when full must stand for 2 - 6 weeks before using. Bokashi juice to be drained off regularly, and used either undiluted as organic drain cleaner, or diluted 100:1 for use as root spray - not for leaves!

Collection options:

Kerbside

Either:

Place the Bokashi treated food waste in a plastic bag, and place on the pavement for collection during the course of the day. If properly treated, no dogs will be interested in the contents of the bag.

Or Domestic on-site

If someone is home on the appropriate day, the Bokashi bucket can be placed within close proximity to the gate, but on the inside, and the doorbell can be rung to either have the bucket emptied for you, or exchanged.

Bucket exchange: Additional R50 per bucket, invoiced quarterly

How to use Bokashi:

Scrape mixed, organic materials (serviettes also) and food waste into the Bokashi bucket, sprinkle a little Bokashi powder over everything, and close the lid.

Repeat the layers until the bucket is full; place in an out of the way place for collection and start again.

Don’t add liquids.

Liquids dilute the Bokashi mixture, and can cause a terrible smell to emanate from the bucket.

Caterer’s suggestion: Use the optional Bokashi bucket holder!

This will allow the Bokashi bucket to be held inside the waste bin for the scraping clean of organic waste from the plates & the quick scraping of the inorganic waste into the waste bin.

Our proudly SA model works with the 10L containers, as the smaller bucket is recommended for inside the bin to give a bigger shared working area, allowing for the fast separation of compostable & waste materials.

A spoonful of Bokashi powder should be added to every 3rd cleanly scrapped plateful of organic materials to prevent smells and to ensure thorough treatment.

 Onsite (business) collections:

Bokashi treated food waste collections are not yet available.

By removing organic waste from the waste stream, you require less wheelie bins which is a money saving step in itself; the drains will not be blocked as often and you are assisting in the establishment of potential future fresh vegetable growers, which could become your suppliers.

 Space saving:

The buckets fit inside each other while waiting to be used & can be stacked on top of each other while waiting for collection.

Either weekly or 3x a week collections of the buckets of Bokashi treated food waste can be selected.

The buckets are fetched from inside the premises and are either emptied or exchanged for clean buckets, depending on your requirements and budget.

If you use the 10L or 25L bucket, the participation rates will remain the same.

Bucket exchange: Additional R20 per bucket, invoiced quarterly

Industrial Food waste handling:

Using a 25L bucket, (old oil buckets will work just fine) layer organic kitchen waste & Bokashi powder, and close the lid when done so that the anaerobic process can start. When bucket is full, start with another
